Why Frameworks Matter in Academic Writing

Research writing is not a creative free-for-all. Each chapter in a research paper performs a specific intellectual task and must therefore follow a logical framework.

When these frameworks are understood and applied correctly, writing becomes clearer, arguments become stronger, and examiners can easily follow the researcher’s reasoning. This guide explains the major frameworks used in each chapter of a research paper and shows how they work in practice. It is written as a teaching note for postgraduate students and early career researchers.

Chapter One: Introduction Framework: Problem–Gap–Purpose Framework

What it does :This framework justifies the study. It explains why the research is necessary and worth undertaking.

Core logic Problem: What is not working or remains unresolved in theory or practice

Gap: What existing studies have failed to address adequately

Purpose: What the current study seeks to achieve

Illustrative example A study on teacher professional development may begin by describing declining instructional quality in basic schools. It then notes that most existing studies focus on urban settings, leaving rural contexts underexplored. The chapter concludes by stating that the study investigates professional development practices in rural basic schools.

Chapter Two: Literature Review Framework: Thematic or Conceptual Framework

What it does This framework organises existing literature into meaningful categories instead of presenting studies as a disconnected list.

Core logic Group studies by themes, variables, or concepts Show relationships and patterns among ideas Build a foundation for the study’s assumptions or variables

Illustrative example Rather than reviewing ten studies individually, a researcher organises the literature under themes such as teaching strategies, assessment practices, and learner engagement, showing how each theme relates to the research problem.

Chapter Three: Methodology Framework: Procedural or Design-Based Framework

What it does :This framework explains how the study was conducted, allowing readers to judge its credibility and replicability.

Illustrative example A qualitative study may follow a clear sequence: case study design, selection of basic school teachers as participants, use of interviews and classroom observations, step-by-step data collection, and thematic analysis.

Chapter Four: Results or Findings Framework: Descriptive or Analytical Framework

What it does This framework presents what the data shows, without interpretation beyond what is directly supported by evidence.

Illustrative example Interview findings are presented under themes such as instructional planning challenges, assessment practices, and classroom interaction, supported by verbatim quotations from participants.

Chapter Five: Discussion Framework: Interpretive or Argumentative Framework

What it does This framework explains the meaning and significance of the findings.

Core logic Interpret key findings Compare results with previous studies Link findings to theory or conceptual framework Explain implications

Illustrative example If teachers report limited use of learner-centred methods, the discussion explains this in relation to existing research, contextual constraints, and relevant learning theories.

Chapter Six: Conclusion Framework: Synthesis Framework

What it does This framework brings the entire study together and provides intellectual closure.

Core logic Summarise key findings Highlight contributions to knowledge Acknowledge limitations Suggest directions for future research

Illustrative example The conclusion restates how the study addressed the research problem, outlines its contribution to educational practice, notes contextual limitations, and proposes areas for further investigation.
