Ghana and Burkina Faso Deepen Education Cooperation

The Ambassador of Burkina Faso to Ghana, H.E. David Kabré, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, to discuss strengthened bilateral cooperation in education, with a focus on tertiary access and language instruction.

The meeting explored practical measures to expand educational opportunities for students and teachers in both countries while reinforcing regional integration through education.

Proposal to Open Ghana’s Public Universities to Burkinabè Students

One of the key proposals discussed was the possibility of opening Ghana’s public tertiary institutions to Burkinabè high school graduates under a capped fee arrangement. The move is expected to make higher education in Ghana more accessible to students from Burkina Faso while promoting cross-border academic mobility.

The proposal aligns with Ghana’s broader higher education regulatory framework under the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, which oversees admissions, standards, and institutional compliance in the tertiary sector.

Supporting English Language Teaching in Burkina Faso

The discussions also focused on strengthening English language teaching in Burkina Faso through targeted teacher training and deployment. The Ambassador indicated that improving English proficiency would expand academic and professional opportunities for Burkinabè students, particularly within the ECOWAS sub-region.

Labour Exchange Programme for Teachers

Hon. Haruna Iddrisu assured the Ambassador of the government’s commitment to deepening educational ties and announced plans for a Labour Exchange Programme. Under the initiative, Ghanaian teachers will be deployed to Burkina Faso to teach English, while Burkinabè teachers will support French language instruction in Ghanaian schools.

The Minister noted that the programme would not only address language gaps but also promote cultural understanding and professional development among teachers.

Regional Integration Through Education

Both parties expressed optimism that the proposed initiatives would strengthen long-term cooperation between Ghana and Burkina Faso, using education as a tool for regional development, skills exchange, and mutual understanding.
