Position on the 2025 League Table: 3rd

The Evangelical Presbyterian College of Education (AMECO), situated on the Amedzope Plateau in the Volta Region, ranks third nationally in the 2025 Top 20 Colleges of Education League.

Its recognition is the result of consistent academic excellence, infrastructural investment, diverse programmes, and a long-standing commitment to the holistic training of professional teachers for Ghana’s education system.

Academic Performance

AMECO maintains an enviable record of high-quality academic outcomes. In the 2024 graduating cohort, 47.8% of students attained first-class honors, while an additional 38.6% graduated with Second-Class Upper.

These outcomes demonstrate a strong teaching and learning environment supported by effective mentoring and supervision during the Supported Teaching in Schools (STS) programme.

The college has developed a reputation for producing highly reflective and research-minded teachers. Reports from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) highlight AMECO as one of the most consistent producers of academically strong graduates across three consecutive years (2022–2024).

Infrastructure

The unique geographical setting of AMECO, perched atop the scenic Amedzope Plateau, distinguishes it from all other colleges in Ghana. Its serene environment promotes academic focus and mental well-being, making it ideal for teacher trainees.

Infrastructural investments in the past five years include:

  • A modern science laboratory equipped with ICT-assisted learning tools.

  • Renovated lecture halls with smart boards and projectors.

  • Expansion of hostel facilities to address rising enrolment numbers.

  • A digital library project supported by the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana in collaboration with international partners.

These infrastructural improvements have significantly enhanced both teaching and research capacity, placing AMECO among the most resourceful colleges outside Ghana’s urban belt.

Population and Enrolment

In 2025, AMECO enrolled just over 1,050 students across four cohorts, with an average of 280 graduates per year. While its population is relatively moderate compared to urban institutions like Accra College of Education, the college’s deliberate strategy of maintaining a balanced student–teacher ratio has contributed to its high-quality learning outcomes.

The gender distribution is steadily improving, with female enrolment rising to 46% in 2025, owing to deliberate equity policies and outreach programmes targeting girls in the Volta highlands.

Programmes and Accreditation

AMECO runs Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) programmes accredited by GTEC and affiliated with the University of Ghana. The areas of specialization include:

  • B.Ed. Primary Education

  • B.Ed. Junior High School Education (Mathematics, Science, English, and Social Studies)

  • B.Ed. Early Grade Education

The college is also pioneering elective courses in Inclusive Education and Environmental Science Pedagogy, reflecting its geographical and ecological context.

In 2023, AMECO successfully underwent an institutional audit by GTEC, receiving full accreditation renewal. The report cited the college’s strong adherence to professional ethics, teacher support systems, and community engagement.

Geography and Cultural Context

Located at the highest human settlement in Ghana, AMECO benefits from a unique climate and cultural identity. The surrounding environment not only inspires ecological consciousness but also strengthens the college’s commitment to environmental and sustainability education.

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church, which founded the college in 1946, continues to provide cultural and moral grounding, ensuring that graduates leave with both professional competence and ethical values.

Contribution to the League Ranking

The methodology of the 2025 Colleges of Education League Table assessed five main indicators:

  1. Academic Performance (40%) – AMECO’s nearly 50% first-class rate secured a top score.

  2. Infrastructure (20%) – The digital library and science labs placed the college above the national average.

  3. Population and Enrolment (15%) – Balanced growth without overstretching facilities added to its strength.

  4. Programme Diversity (15%) – Inclusion of environmental pedagogy and inclusive education distinguished the institution.

  5. Accreditation and Partnerships (10%) – Full GTEC accreditation and international collaborations reinforced its credibility.

By scoring strongly across all criteria, AMECO achieved a third-place ranking, outperforming several larger institutions.

Outlook

Looking ahead, AMECO is positioning itself as a centre of excellence in inclusive and sustainable education. Plans are underway to introduce specialized research clusters on climate change education and community-based pedagogy, which could further improve its standing in future league tables.

Summary:
E.P. College of Education, Amedzope, is not only a top-performing teacher training institution but also a symbol of how geography, tradition, and innovation can combine to deliver outstanding educational outcomes. Its third-place ranking on the 2025 national league table is a reflection of consistent academic strength, infrastructural growth, and a forward-looking curriculum aligned with national education priorities.
