Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Cynthia Morrison, has said that over 11,000 girls were pregnant in 2018.
According to her about 6% of men who were responsible for these pregnancies already had wives with about 36% cohabiting with other women.
The Minister was speaking at a day’s dialogue at Krodua near Bawjiase in the Central Region on the theme “The status of women and girls”.
The issue of the Central Region’s record of teenage pregnancy has remained worrisome in recent years.
It is in this light that the Gender Ministry have taken up the task of educating the public and communities in the Central Region on the need to support girl child education in a bid to curb rising issues of teenage pregnancies in the country.
Mad. Cynthia Morrison further added that her outfit was embarking on educational programs in the various communities to help educate the general public on the effect of these practices and the call to empower women and girls to lessen poverty in the country.
Mrs. Morrison also stated that women empowerment and encouraging gender equality was crucial for accelerating sustainable development and ending all manner of discrimination against women and girls.
She further advised parents to take advantage of the free SHS education by the government to propel their girl child to school. Mrs. Morrison pleaded on men to join the initiative to ensure fairness in the country.
