The Ghana Education Service (GES) has condemned the alleged theft of student food supplies at Awaso STEM Senior High School in the Western North Region, following the arrest of a school matron and cook by police.
GES Responds to Alleged Food Theft at Awaso STEM SHS
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly condemned the alleged theft of food supplies meant for students of Awaso STEM Senior High School in the Western North Region. In an official statement dated 26 December 2025, the Service confirmed that it had received reports regarding the arrest of a school matron, Bennedicta Nyamadi, and a cook, Rachel Kyeremateng, in connection with the alleged theft of food items intended for students of the school.
GES Rejects Misconduct and Abuse of Office
GES management stated unequivocally that it does not condone any form of misconduct, abuse of office, or actions that compromise the welfare, nutrition, and wellbeing of students under its care.
According to the Service, if the allegations are proven, the actions of the suspects would be in direct violation of the ethical standards, professional conduct, and core values that guide the Ghana Education Service.
Police Investigation Ongoing
The Service confirmed that the matter is currently under investigation by the Ghana Police Service. GES indicated its full support for the ongoing investigations and assured the public of its readiness to cooperate with all relevant state institutions to ensure that due process is followed.

Assurance to Parents and the Public
GES has assured parents, guardians, and the general public that robust monitoring mechanisms exist within the Service to safeguard public resources and protect student welfare. The statement further indicated that where lapses are identified, appropriate sanctions will be applied in accordance with the GES Code of Conduct and the relevant laws of Ghana.
Call for Integrity Among School Staff
As part of its response, the Ghana Education Service encouraged all school staff to uphold integrity and demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility in the management of public resources entrusted to them. The Service reiterated its commitment to accountability, transparency, and the protection of students across all public educational institutions.
Background to the Incident
The statement follows the arrest of two staff members of Awaso STEM Senior High School by the Western North Regional Police Command over the alleged theft of large quantities of food items meant for students. Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
