Impressive: University of Ghana acquires land for construction of more hostels

Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, says that the University management, as part of efforts to ameliorate the accommodation crises bedeviling the institution, has through negotiations assigned some lands for the construction of hostel facilities.

The Vice Chancellor was addressing students at this year’s matriculation ceremony at the University of Ghana Mensah Sarbah field on Saturday, September 28, 2019.

He made this known in response to a petition by the Junior Common Room of the Commonwealth Hall, imploring school management to find solutions to the accommodation challenges on campus and also proffering some ways of mitigating the problem.

While acknowledging the petitioners, the Vice Chancellor said that some measures have already been rolled out to address the phenomenon including negotiations with some private entities to facilitate developments in hostel facilities.

Management appreciates the concerns raised by the petitioners, and has prior to the petition considered various approaches towards

the improvement of the situation. In this regard, the University of Ghana’s Land Lease Committee is in negotiation with private bodies to expand housing options on campus.

He highlighted that some acres of the University land have been accrued and negotiations are still underway to secure additional acres, all in a bid to expedite housing projects.

Active negotiations are ongoing over an assignment of 6 acres of UG land for hostel development. Meanwhile, approval for negotiation with a couple of other companies has recently been given for hostel development on a further 12 acres of UG land.
