University of Ghana to purchase additional water tankers to relieve water shortage on Campus

The Physical Development and Municipality Service Directorate (PDMSD) of the University of Ghana has revealed the intention of Management to purchase additional water tankers for the academic community.

According to a release from the unit in charge of physical infrastructure and estate planning of the University, signed by its Director, Mr. Charles Kofi Nti, the decision to purchase new water tankers has become necessary due to the recent water shortage that the University is facing.  The release explained that the tankers would come in handy as the cause of the situation is an external challenge with the Ghana Water Company Limited and it might take a longer period to be curtailed.

“The Ghana Water Company Ltd has informed the University of the current challenges they are facing with their water distribution system due to; an irregular power supply to their sub-stations, old pipelines frequently breaking down and high indebtedness from non-payment by the government,” he said.

The release added that the University is in talks with Ghana Water Company Limited for the construction of an additional pipeline from the high-pressure line near the 4 hostels to augment the water supply to the University. He said,

“To prevent any such future occurrences, the University has approached the Management of GWCL to construct new pipelines from the high-pressure line near the four hostels to ensure the challenge never happens again,” he said.

For the past few months, residents and staff alike of the University of Ghana main campus have been battling erratic water supply. Though most of the halls have back-up water storage tanks, the situation has been reported to be severe at the Diasporan Halls and also at the annexes of the various traditional halls on campus.

Below is the release issued by the director of PDMSD;

Dear all,

STATEMENT FROM PDMSD ON THE WATER SITUATION ON CAMPUS

Ghana Water Company Ltd has informed the University of the current challenges they are facing with their water distribution system due to:

i. Irregular power supply to their sub-stations and the subsequent delay in rebooting the systems to get water flowing.

ii. Old pipelines frequently breaking down or bursting due to sudden water pressure.

iii. High indebtedness from non-payment by Government.

Meanwhile, Management has started the process of acquiring an additional water tanker to relieve the situation. Management has also approached GWCL to construct an additional pipeline from the high-pressure line near the 4 Hostels to augment the water supply to the university.
