Proposal for Testing all Teachers and Learners a huge task – COVID-19 Task Force

The COVID-19 Task Force has explained to Teachers that their proposal for general testing of all Teachers and Learners in Ghana before the reopening of schools was a huge task, a situation considered to be practically impossible.

Speaking in a stakeholder meeting held by the President of the Republic of Ghanan, Nana Akuffo Addo with the pre-tertiary education unions in the Jubilee House on Tuesday, May 26,2020., the COVID-19 Task Force indicated proposal on testing every teacher and pupil is a huge task.

According to the Task Force, testing of all teachers and learners in Ghana was a huge task because the available test kits are even on short supply.

They added that the Test Kits were also expensive and the difficult aspect was also the huge number of teachers and learners in Ghana.

The task force said they have so far, tested 200,000 people but teachers alone are more than 300,000.

Teacher Unions’ Proposal

Teacher Unions have suggested some nineteen (19) possible measures to curb the spread of the novel COVID-19 Pandemic, in response to a request by the Ghana Education Service(GES) to propose some practical measures to curb the prevalence ahead of a possible reopening of Schools.

The Unions, in a letter dated May 26, 2020, to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof. Kwesi Opoku Amankwa and copied to EducationGhana . have given some 19 suggestions categorized under two thematic areas.

The thematic areas include short and Intermediate terms as well as a medium-long term measure.

one major aspect of the proposal was that “All staff and learners should be tested before schools reopen and those with positive results should not be allowed entry into the schools.”

The attendees include; His Excellency the President, Chief of Staff, representatives from the Ministry of Education, Gov. Task Force on Covid-19, Some Presidential staff(Eugene Arhin and Nana Asante Bedituo and others) The Director-General of the GES and his two Deputies, Chairman – GES Council as well as the Union Leaders and their Secretaries (GNAT, CCT GH, NAGRAT, TEWU).
