Police Arrest Suspect in UCC Student Murder Case
The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a student of the whose death shocked the university community and the nation.
According to a police statement, the suspect, Michael Mensah, aged 39, was arrested by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on 15 June 2026 at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast following what police described as sustained intelligence-led operations.
Suspect Allegedly Picked Victim from UCC Hostel Enclave
Preliminary investigations by the police indicate that on 11 June 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., the suspect allegedly picked up the deceased from Ayensu Plaza, located within the hostel enclave of the University of Cape Coast.
Investigators say the suspect subsequently transported the student to Hutchland Beach, where she was reportedly last seen before her death.
Police disclosed that the suspect claims to be a teacher by profession and also works as a driver.
Investigation Continues
The arrest follows days of public concern and widespread calls for justice after the student was reported missing and later found dead near the coastal area of Cape Coast.
The Ghana Police Service has indicated that investigations are still ongoing and that additional information will be released as the case progresses.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and allow investigators to complete their work while ensuring due process is followed.
