The National Teaching Council has Launched the 2019 edition of the Ghana Teacher Prize (GTP),formerly National Best Teachers’ Awards at the GNAT Hall in Accra.
The prestigious Award which seeks to enhance the efficiency of Ghanaian Teachers and motivate their hard work was launched on Wednesday,August 21,2019.
The event will be preceded by a two-day educational conference aimed at disseminating research findings and exhibitions to expose participants to innovative approaches and best practices that support the teacher to become effective towards higher learner outcome.
The main event shall be held at the Paa Joe Stadium at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, on October 5,2019.
This year’s ceremony is on the theme: “Young teachers: The future of the profession”
The Awardees
The Board Chairman of the NTC, Prof. Eric Nyarko-Simpson, announced the top ten awardees which he emphasized,were in no specific order.
He indicated, the over all winner shall emerged from the list of the top ten finalists of this year’s Ghana Teacher Prize.
They awardees for this year’s Ghana Teacher Prize include; Ms Philippa Darko of the Experimental M/A Kindergarten, Kumasi; Charrald Bibi Kolevi of the Awanano Model D/A School, Shama; Christiana Koperebarah Yeyeh of the Yumba Special School for the Intellectually Disabled; Clement Assou of the Ofori Panin Senior High School (SHS) and Ishmael Iddris of the Asanteman D/A JHS at Bia in the Western Region.
Others include; Mark Cofie of the Kanton SHS, Tumu; Munkaila Alhassan of the Ghana Muslim Mission SHS, Sekyere Central, Ashanti Region; Ms Sabina Koba Dosu of St Dominic R/C Basic School, Akwatia; Serlom Kwabena Gyimah of Brewianiase M/A Primary ‘A’, Nkwanta-South, Volta Region and Theodosia Larkai Oppong of the Aburi Girls’ SHS, Aburi.
The Awards
The overall best teacher will receive Ghana’s most Outstanding Teacher Award,and a three-bedroom house while the first runner-up will receive a 4X4 pick-up with the second runner-up receiving a saloon car.
Other categories including the best Primary School Teacher, Best Junior High School Teacher, best special school and the HIV/AIDS most school alert.
Other prizes including, fridges, deep freezers, laptops, television sets, branded T-shirts, educational materials and cash prizes will be presented to other deserving schools and teachers.
Sponsors
The sponsors of this year’s ceremony include Prudential Bank Ltd, which donated a double-cabin 4×4 pickup, GLICO Pension, which is providing a saloon car for the second runner-up, while Databank will also provide a saloon car.
Other sponsors are GCB Bank Star Oil Ltd, SIC Life Company Ltd, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), EPP Bookshop and VIDYA Bookstore.
Non-Teaching Staff
The Acting Executives Secretary of the National Teaching Council (NTC), Mr Christian Addai-Poku, said the award had been expanded to cover non-teaching staff to make the work of the teacher complete.
Teacher Motivation
The Secretary General of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mr Ofori Atta Acheampong, urged government to motivate teachers in their endeavor to promote quality education in the country.
He said government’s decision to adequately reward teachers will ensure their stay in the classroom.
According to him the teaching profession should not be seen as a stop gap but rather as a profession that transforms the life of others.
