Violent protests erupted at Nkwanta SHS in Ghana’s Oti Region after over 200 mobile phones were seized. Nine students have been arrested following destruction of school property and assault on staff.
Nkwanta (O/R), May 14, GNA – A wave of unrest has shaken the Nkwanta Senior High School in Ghana’s Oti Region after students staged a violent protest in response to the seizure of over 200 mobile phones by school authorities.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 13, at approximately 5:00 PM, when enraged students vandalised school property including a school bus, and reportedly assaulted some teachers during the chaos.
According to school officials, the confiscation took place during class hours as part of an enforcement measure to uphold discipline. However, the move sparked anger among students, leading to violent retaliation.
Military personnel were swiftly deployed to the campus to restore calm after school authorities reached out for support. Some students involved in the violence were reportedly caned on-site for misconduct.
The Headmaster, Mr. Solomon Bagman, described the situation as unfortunate, stressing the school’s renewed focus on maintaining discipline among students. Municipal Education Director, Mr. Jonathan Korsinah, strongly condemned the incident and assured that investigations were underway.
“We are working with both parents and school authorities to resolve the issue and prevent similar incidents in the future,” Mr. Korsinah said.
The Nkwanta Police have so far arrested nine students in connection with the destruction and assault, with legal proceedings expected to follow.
The incident has reignited conversations around student discipline, mobile phone usage in schools, and the need for balanced enforcement and communication in managing youth behaviour in educational institutions.
