GETFund Scholarship for “Rich but Greedy” Students While “Poor but Brilliant” Students Go for Student Loan- Educationist Cries

Respected Ghanaian educationist, Counsellor Daniel Fenyi has expressed utmost shock at the arrant ‘waste’ of tax payers money on some “rich but greedy” students instead of “brilliant but needy” students.

The Auditor General’s report has revealed that an amount of GH¢ 425,698,973,000 (old cedis has been expended as scholarship for “brilliant but needy” students under the GETFund scheme between 2012 to 2018 academic years.

The names of some of these “brilliant but needy” students are Prof. John Gatsi (Dean, Business School, UCC), Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Education Minister), Nana O. Ofori Atta, (daughter of Ken Ofori Atta), Dr. Justice Srem Sai (GIMPA), Dr. Prince Hamid (Exe. Sec. of NaCCA), Hon. Sarah Adwoa Sarfo (Procurement Minister), 30-year old Hon. Speaking to some media houses including TV3’s Kumasi-based Akoma 87.9FM, Solid 103.7FM and Accra-based Radio Gold last Monday morning, the saddened educationist assured Ghanaians that “Karma” will surely visit anyone who unduely benefitted from the “waste”.

It was revealed in the report that 3,112 people benefitted from the scheme out of which 2,217 persons were unlawfully granted scholarships to study abroad.

Also, GH¢18,952,380,000 (old cedis) was “wasted” on empty reasons as course extensions, change of school and cost of deferrals. Sadly, according to the report, GH¢18 billion (old cedis) was disbursed to even people “who were not prepared to pursue further studies at the time of applying for the scholarship”.

Counsellor Daniel Fenyi has insinuated that the amount “wasted” on the few people could be used to build about fifty (50) more universities to benefit a lot more Ghanaians for many years. Counsellor Daniel Fenyi expressed disappointment especially in Matthew Opoku Prempeh and Dr. Prince Hamid who are beneficiaries of the scheme but are destroying the education system.
