1. Personal Items for Boarding Students

Boarding students are expected to report to school with the following:
  • Hard-body suitcase or trunk
  • Chop box (wooden or plastic)
  • Drinking cup (plastic or stainless steel)
  • Plate and a full set of cutlery
  • Toiletries: 1 deodorant, 1 pack of toilet roll, toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, pomade, and 2 packs of sanitary pads (for girls)
  • Bucket with cover and pail (plastic type)
  • Religious book: RSV/NIV Bible, Quran, or hymn book (school-specific)
These items are non-negotiable, as they support students’ daily living in boarding facilities.

2. Clothing and Footwear

The clothing requirements for boarders are school-specific but standardized nationally under the new prospectus:
  • Decent sandals (school colour, no embellishment)
  • Pair of leather slippers
  • Decent sneakers (black or white)
  • Socks (school-specific, minimum two pairs)
  • Pyjamas or sleepwear
  • Underwear: 5 pants and 3 vests (girls), 3 boxer shorts or pants and 3 singlets (boys)
  • A pair of khaki trousers
  • A pair of white trousers (or school-specific colour)
  • Two white shirts (1 short sleeve, 1 long sleeve)
  • White dress for ladies
  • Two checked dresses (where applicable)

3. Bedding Requirements

Boarding students are expected to bring:
  • Pillow with mackintosh cover
  • Two bedsheets (plain white) with two pillowcases
  • One blanket and one sleeping cloth
  • Student-size mosquito net
  • Student mattress (where the school does not provide one)
This section is critical because many schools no longer supply mattresses.

4. Academic and Study Tools

Academic materials include:
  • Mathematical set
  • Scientific calculator
  • School bag
These tools are essential for effective classroom and examination participation.

5. Cleaning and Sanitation

To maintain hygiene in the boarding facilities, each student must purchase cleaning materials from any one of the following groups:
  • Group A: A pair of hand gloves (hard), 5 litres of liquid soap, 1kg washing powdered soap
  • Group B: 1 small size bleach, 1 dust pan, 1 long-handle broom, 1 scrubbing brush
  • Group C: 1 standing mop and mop bucket, 1 duster, 1 short local broom

6. General Notes from GES

The Ghana Education Service emphasized that:
  • All personal items must be embossed or embroidered with the student’s name.
  • No student should be asked to provide unapproved or extra items.
  • Parents should purchase only what is listed in the official prospectus.
This harmonised approach ensures transparency and affordability across all public senior high schools.
