GAF Chief of Defence Staff engages GETFund to seek funding for infrastructure at the newly accredited National Defence University in Teshie.
Accra, Ghana – May 19, 2025 – The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has called on the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to support the infrastructural development of the newly established National Defence University (NDU) in Teshie.
During an engagement on Thursday, 15 May 2025, with GETFund Administrator Mr. Paul Adjei, Lt. Gen Agyapong appealed for financial backing to construct standard academic and administrative facilities for the university, which was accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) in December 2024.
University to Merge Key Military Colleges
The CDS noted that the NDU represents a merger of four key military educational institutions:
- National College of Defence Studies (NCDS)
- Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping and Training Centre (KAIPTC)
- Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC)
- Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC)
This unification aims to streamline higher military education and enhance strategic defence training in Ghana.
GETFund Signals Support
Mr. Paul Adjei expressed GETFund’s willingness to support the NDU’s development within its current parliament-approved distribution framework, noting the urgency and relevance of the CDS’s request.
“We are still populating our 2025 facility development plan, so your reminder today is timely,” Mr. Adjei stated.
Scholarships and Further Support Discussed
The meeting also explored the potential for GETFund-sponsored scholarships for GAF personnel undertaking further studies both domestically and internationally.
Accompanying the CDS were senior military officials, including Air Vice Marshal Felix Asante, President of the NDU; Maj. Gen. Emmanuel Kotia (Rtd); and Lt. Col. Sena Affanyi, the CDS’s Protocol Officer.
GETFund’s team included Deputy Administrator Mr. Alhassan S. Dandaawa, Financial Controller Mr. Alexis Asuinura, and Scholarships Head Mrs. Phillida Lamptey.
The dialogue marks a strategic milestone in aligning military education with national tertiary development efforts.
