COIVD-19 : Photo and details of Guinean escapee found in Accra

A Guinean woman who escaped a hotel facility in Northern Ghana where she was being quarantined over COVID-19 has been found in the nation’s capital, Accra.

A deputy Health Minister, Alexander Abban, said the patient was spotted on Saturday and was subsequently arrested.

She is among 10 foreign nationals who tested positive of the COVID-19 in the Northern Region.

The foreigners were arrested days after President Akufo-Addo announced a border closure as part of measures to contain the spread of the COVID-19 disease which has so far claimed five lives.

Though the Deputy Health Minister could not give full details of the arrest, many Ghanaians are still questioning how the escapee could have made the 640km journey following a partial lockdown in some routes leading to Accra.

“I’m just wondering how this person got to Accra because she was actually spotted and arrested. That is the shocking bit. How did she cross Kumasi? The person has been arrested. Yesterday when I was in Korle-Bu I chanced on that information,” Abban was quoted by Accra-based Citi FM.

The sudden disappearance of the COVID-19 patient sparked fears in the Northern Region capital.

Many interest groups had earlier issued a two-day ultimatum to produce the patient or face a series of actions.

Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed in an interview expressed shock at the development. Despite the gravity of the situation he urged residents to remain calm.

“Our people are safe…we are working very hard to ensure that the people don’t get too panicked. Nobody should be afraid because our security are on top of issues”, the Regional Minister said.

Meanwhile, a man who was mistaken for the COVID-19 patient is being monitored by health officials at a medical facility.
