AngloGold donates C250,000 towards construction of KNUST Obuasi Campus

The proposed establishment of a campus of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology at Obuasi has received a boost with a ¢250,000  support from Anglogold Ashanti.

A cheque for the amount was presented by the mining giant’s Head of Operations, Brett Thompson at a ceremony over the weekend.

“As part of the process, AngloGold is looking to make a donation of ¢250,000 to the municipal assembly to assist in the refurbishment of those assets”.

AngloGold has already released some of its buildings to the Obuasi Municipal Assembly as basic academic and residential infrastructure for the project.

Mr. Thompson says the gesture is part of the company’s contribution to helping develop Obuasi.

“We are looking to contribute in any way we can to the further development of  Obuasi. And part of that is to donate some of the surplus assets we have in the northern part at least, and they found a very positive purpose now and that is to establish a university campus here in Obuasi and we hope to see that opening happen this year”, he said.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Assembly has promised ¢150,000 being the remainder of ¢400,000 needed for refurbishment of buildings donated by AngloGold.

Chief Executive, Elijah Adansi-Bonah, who received the Anglogold cheque, commended the company for its commitment to the establishment of the university campus.

“AGA’s commitment to making sure we set up this university is something nobody can downplay it.”

Mr. Adansi-Bonah paid glowing tribute to the former Sustainability Manager of AngloGold Ashanti, Nana Ampofo Bekoe who died in a ghastly motor accident in May this year for his contribution to the establishment of the university campus.

He appealed to officials to name one of the buildings after him.

“I want to take this opportunity to mention Nana Ampofo Bekoe. This man was instrumental in the early stage preparations of this university. I will move that one of the buildings would be named after this man because his role as far as setting up this university is concerned,  is something nobody can convince me that it was not remarkable”.
