Ada SHS’s Esther Partey wins Webb of Excellence Award

Webb of Excellence Award

A female student of the Ada Senior High School, Miss Esther Pamela Teiko Partey, is the proud winner of the 2020 Webb of Excellence Welfare Fund scholarship to pursue pharmacy at the University of Cape Coast.

Miss Partey won the scholarship after emerging the Best Female Student of the school in the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The scholarship was offered by the Fund, which is a non-profit organisation set up by a former Canadian tutor of the school.

The scholarship award, which was instituted some five years ago by Miss Eleanor Louise Webb, a Canadian, who taught at the school between 1968 and 1970 and had a huge passion for girl-child education, was originally meant to support brilliant needy female students to pursue senior high school education.

But with the introduction of the free senior high school in 2017, the focus was shifted to the most brilliant female student who gained admission to any of the country’s public universities.

In 2019, two female students—Juliet Nuerki Annang and Nyemignor Korkor Okai—jointly won the award and are currently in their second year at the University of Ghana, Legon, where they are pursuing a course in biological science.

Package

Presenting the scholarship award, the Chairman of the Administrators of the Fund, Dr Gabriel Canacoo, said as part of the package, the Webb of Excellence Welfare Fund was supporting Miss Partey to pay her academic user fee and  residential fee for the first year.

“In subsequent years, the fund will support you financially with some graduated sum of money provided you obtain a B average grading or higher at the end of every year in the course you are pursuing,” Dr Canacoo added.

Others

Before then, three female students: Stella Korlekuor Akpanglo (2015-2017), Charity Asigbey Kpelemeh (2016-2018), and Emelia Korlekuor Addowah (2017-2019) had benefited from the award in pursuing their senior high school education.

The headmaster of the school, Mr Kojo Ayibor, who was the special guest of honour at the function, was full of praise for Miss Webb for her vision in instituting the Fund with a seed money of just 3,000 Canadian dollars—a sum bequeathed to her by her late auntie— and called for worldwide support for such a worthy cause.

“I am also delighted that all previous beneficiaries of the award have been able to build a better future for themselves and I hope the current awardee will follow suit,” Mr Ayibor added.

Gratitude

For her part, Miss Partey expressed her gratitude to the founder and administrators of the Webb of Excellence Welfare Fund for creating such a wonderful platform to encourage young brilliant female students.

“Studying pharmacy at the UCC is one of the great milestones in my life and it is an undeniable fact that this award will contribute significantly to my dream of becoming one of the best pharmacists in this country and, by extension, the world,” Miss Partey declared.

At the same function, Miss Stephanie Okenley Adamo, who narrowly missed out on the award for the 2019-2020 Academic Year due to circumstances entirely beyond her control and is currently studying BSc Business Administration at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST), was offered one-off assistance for the payment of her residential fee and academic user fee for one year.
