Vice Chancellor, Afful-Broni still at post – UEW

Authorities at the University of Education, Winneba say the Vice-Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni, is still at post contrary to media reports suggesting the former VC’s takeover.

“The University urges students, parents, staff, alumni and all other stakeholders to treat with utmost contempt any suggestion that there has been a change of Vice-Chancellor,” a statement issued by the Registrar, said on Wednesday.

It thus urged all stakeholders that the University premises are opened, safe and secured for business.

“All administrative and academic activities, including our Sandwich Session which commenced on Monday July 22, 2019 are going on in earnest,” the statement added.

UEW condemns ‘forceful’ takeover

Meanwhile, UEW has condemned what it describes as a coup d’etat manner in which some six former staff of the university led by former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mawuto Avoke stormed the school’s premises to reinstate themselves.

According to Prof. Avoke, his forceful takeover follows his clearance by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) after he was indicted for abusing his office.

But the PRO of the University, Ernest Azutigah has questioned the basis for the action taken by the aggrieved staff.

“The Police led them straight to our council chamber ostensibly to have a press conference to announce their takeover of the university. Apparently, they have a report from EOCO and BNI that they have been cleared and so they went ahead to apply for a court injunction and which reason they have taken the action they took, Rambo style coup d’etat I call it.

“This matter has been taken to court, Prof. Avoke is challenging his dismissal at the Cape Coast High Court where it has been scheduled that there will be a ruling on 3oth July. This EOCO and BNI issues were raised there which the court is about to give a ruling,” the PRO added in an interview with Starr News.
