The University of Ghana has been hauled before an Accra High Court for including some persons in a committee it set up for the selection of a new Vice-Chancellor.

The plaintiff, one Patrick Justice Ennin, who is an alumnus of the University, is praying the court to declare that the Committee was “unlawfully constituted in breach of prevailing law by the inclusion of Mrs Vesta A. Nunoo and Prof. Baffuor Agyeman-Duah”

He alleges that the two, who were representative of the University Council on the Committee, have had their tenure as members of Council expired prior to their nomination.

He is seeking an annulment of the entire work done by the Committee.

This case against the University comes with barely two months to the end of the tenure of Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu as the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

The tenure of Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, the current Vice-Chancellor of the University, ends on July 31, 2021.

“As of July 31, 2020, the tenure of many members of the University Council had expired and the continued membership and inclusion in the work of the University Council of these members renders the activities of the Council, post terminal dates null and void and of no legal effect whatsoever,” the suit says in part.

Persons vying for Vice-Chancellor office

In January this year, the Search Committee announced that it had received applications from seven candidates for the office of Vice-Chancellor.

The seven vying for the office include the two Pro-Vice-Chancellors of the University, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo (Academic and Students Affairs), and Prof. Felix Ankomah Asante (Research, Innovation, and Development)

Others are Prof. Peter Quartey (Director, Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research), Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe (Regional Institute for Population Studies), Prof. Daniel Frimpong Ofori (Provost, College of Humanities), Prof. Godfred Alufar Bokpin (Dean of Student Affairs), and Prof. Daniel Wesley Lund ( Dean, Faculty of Business Administration)

Formation of Search Committee

The Search Committee comprises three members nominated by Council; three members nominated by the Academic Board; a Chairperson appointed by Council who is neither a member of Council nor of the University; and the Registrar acting as the secretary of the committee.
