A fund raising strategy to raise funds for the establishment of state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities has been developed at the University of Ghana (UG).
“A fundraising strategy to modernize laboratories and research facilities at University of Ghana has been developed by the Laboratory Modernization Implementation Committee as part of the Strategic Initiatives,”
This initiative was developed by the Laboratory Modernization Implementation Committee of the University and involves a four year fundraising campaign to raise a target of US$500m.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, vouchsafed this development during the July Congregation which came off over the weekend.
He explained that “establishing State-of-the-art laboratories and developing world class facilities at UG will help bridge and better link between theory and practice.
A well resourced University with modern facilities for research can help deliver and advance Ghana’s national agenda of self-sustaining development, as well as meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Africa’s Agenda 2063,”
He further espoused that this new strategy will help improve the school’s contribution to researches for sustainable national development.
Management of the University of Ghana has envisioned to become a world class research-intensive University over the next decade.
However, about 11% of its admission quota, is for postgraduate studies.
Concerning funding to support graduate studies, Dr. Frederick Boamah, one of the Valedictorians at the 2019 University of Ghana July Congregation, called on stakeholders to put a fund together to support graduate studies.

He explained that the fees of graduate students combined with the cost of running research are a huge burden and that has en effect on the quality of research produced.
Dr. Boamah, who graduated with a PhD in maritime security, added that despite the efforts made by the University of Ghana in helping the graduate students there still is more to do.
“It is important that we fund research as you know, we pay school fees on campus for graduate studies. You need to be able to pay the school fees as well as fund your trip for data collection. Obviously that is quite heavy on a lot of people so it more or less compromises the quality of research…Industry plays a very critical role in the consumption of research outcomes, so we need the university as well as the consumers of research to be able to come together to put a fund together to be able to fund research. It can no longer be the bane of students to raise his own funding for research’’
