Students of the Tumu Secondary Technical Senior High School in the Sissala East Municipality of the Upper West region last night embarked on violent demonstration, destroying properties estimated at thousands of Ghana Cedis.
Reports suggest that the students started the protest by cutting off electricity to the school at about 11:30 pm and later ransacked teachers bungalows and other properties of the school.
Their action was in protest of the seizure of their mobile phones by school authorities.
It took the timely intervention of personnel of the Ghana police service to calm the situation.
The Sissala East municipal police commander, DSP Stephen Abanga, confirming the incident to Citi News said the situation is under control.
He, however, disclosed that they are yet to access the exact extent of damage or make any arrests.
Authorities have shut down the Tumu School indefinitely following last night’s disturbances on campus.
This will affect final year students who are sitting for the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Exams.
That school was closed down indefinitely following student rioting after the school authorities seized and destroyed their mobile phones.
Police ended up arresting 30 students over the incident.
