Teacher Trainees call on UCC to extend Revision and Exams date over disorganized Academic Calendar

Level 200 Trainees at the Public Colleges of Education are calling on the University of Education (UCC) to extend their  Revision and Examination dates for them to be able to prepare adequately for the exams.

Speaki8ng to EducationGhana, the Trainees said Colleges of education were supposed to return to campus on 16th March 2020 for the commencement of their second semester of 2019/2020 academic year.

”Unfortunately, during the president’s state of the nation address on Sunday 15th March 2020 evening, he announced that schools should be closed down until further notice.
This actually hit us hard since we were just about to go back to campus.” The Trainnes said.

”Some few weeks later, the initiative came out to roll out virtual (online) learning in order to prevent learning loss.”

”We didn’t take it slightly since we know what it cost. From network connectivity problems, lack of mobile gadgets to engage in this virtual learning are some of the challenges.”

”Our leaders together with University of Cape Coast ( the University which all level 200s in the various colleges are affiliated, and some level 100s) came out with the decision to formally commencing the second semester on 27th April 2020 and end on 31st July 2020.”

”It all started with most of the students not been able to access the platform. They put several measured in place but couldn’t yield 100% results. We even had a series of virtual meetings with T-Tel personnel concerning our grievances but it yields no results.” They argued.

”We channelled our grievances through our leaders- TTAG but the same response keep coming.”

”At a point, we got to understand that our leaders ain’t ready to help us so we have to let it go.T-tel decided to distribute SD-cards and smartphones to some students who complained of a lack of such ICT tools. The sad part is that some are now receiving these items.” They said.

”The lectures which were supposed to end on 31st July was postponed to 15th August to enable lectures to complete their course outline and online assessment.”

The Appeal

About two weeks ago, UCC released a press directing all level 200 in the colleges affiliated to her to go back to campus 31st August, for a week revision and two weeks for exams.

This sounds so unhappy in the ears of the  trainee teachers because,

”The 3 weeks isn’t enough for us to do revision and write exams.”

”Also, we actually started the second semester online unlike other universities which were half done the semester through face-to-face teaching before migrating to the virtual method due to the pandemic.”

”Last year, about 450 trainees teachers were expelled from the colleges due to poor academic performance. Even for that one, we had face-to-face teaching for both semesters. How much more 3 weeks for revision and exams. It’s very sad.” They lamented.

”We, therefore, would like to use your platform to plead with the stakeholders involved- NCTE, PRINCOF and UCC and the president especially to intervene on our behalf for the extension of the days stipulated for us to complete the semester on campus to at least 5 weeks to enable us to have a good revision for exams.” They pleaded.
