Review Allowance Policy to aid Trainees solve COVID-19 Financial Challenges – Teacher trainee

A teacher trainee is calling on the government to review Allowance Policy to aid Trainees solve COVID-19 Financial Challenges.

Godwin Afful, who schools at the Accra College of Education , opined that currently , teacher trainees in the various Colleges of Education need money to be able to access their online platforms to study.

He lamented. that trainees need to get data bundles to be able to have access to their online learning platforms.

According to him, the allowance policy be reviewed at least for the interim so that trainees can be able to prepare themselves financially and psychologically to be able to study during the COVID-19 break.

Online Lessons

Godwin added, that with respect to its accompanying challenges particularly with the accessibility, connectivity and if possible, the online lessons should be handled as Introductory or preparatory lessons to the Second Semester Courses despite the fact that the virtual learning will engage students at home.

Payment of Examination Fees

He further lamented.that the University of Cape Coast (UCC) was demanding for full payment of Examination fees to enable students access to their exams results and e-learning platforms.

He argued, why the UCC took such a decision when finances have become a challenge to the less privileged students with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

”Besides, it’s pathetic UCC is now demanding for full payment of Examination fees to enable students access to their exams results and e-learning platforms when finances have become a challenge to the less privileged students with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.” He lamented.

He called on the stakeholders, to address their concerns now if the policy would be effective and sustainable.

Trainees Allowance to be paid in May 2020

Earlier, Augustine Appiah, the National President of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG), indicated, that per the academic calendar with the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) and his engagement with the SLTF, allowance for trainee teachers for the second semester is scheduled for payment for the months of May, June, July and August.

Some teacher trainees also argued that why should the second semester begins in April online and allowances be scheduled for May 2020?

All 46 Public Colleges of Education are expected to reopen for academic work for the second semester of 2019/2020 academic year via interactive online platforms on Monday, 27th April 2020.
