Teachers from the public Basic and Senior High Schools have for the first time in many years spoke in one voice to debunk a comment made by the Minister of Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, which indicates that the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was behind their December 9 intended strike action.
The teachers said the comment made by the Minister was a ‘Childish Propaganda’ which intends to distract and divide the teachers’ front for his selfish political gains.
Speaking to EducationGhana’s Ellis Ferdinand some teachers from the public basic and senior high schools believed Minister of Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO’s comment was a direct insult to teachers.
Some also took to social media to show their dissatisfaction, saying their union leaders were not serious with their demands at the earlier stage.

NAPO’s Comment
The Minister of Education accused teachers of allowing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to influence them.
Dr Mathew Opoku- Prempeh claimed credible information available to him suggested that some NDC members met with some teacher groups to plan the strike.
His comment follows a nationwide strike declared by three teacher unions effective Monday, December 9, 2019 over failure of government to pay legacy arrears of members.
Solidarity
Speaking on why not only affected teachers should go on strike, the teachers challenged the Ghana Education Service (GES) on the explanation of what a union is, saying every single individual who has been affected by the legacy salary arrears or not must demand what was due them.
The teachers said they had been taken for granted for a very long time by their employer, the Ghana Education Service.

Collective Agreement
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) earlier called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure that by December 31, 2019, a new Collective Agreement for its workers is negotiated, agreed upon by all parties involved and signed, to legitimize it, to replace the old one which expired since 2011.
The directive was contained in a communique issued by the National Council of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), during its Annual Council Meeting at the GNAT Village, Abankro, near Ejisu in the Ashanti Region.
