JUST IN: GNAT National Executives Unanimously order General Secretary to leave Office by September 30

The National Executive (NE) of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has unanimously ordered its General Secretary to leave office by September 30,2019.

Information gathered by EducationGhana suggests that the decision was taken by the NEC on September 17,2019 at a National Executive Council meeting.

The National Executive in a unanimous decision reviewed its  earlier decision on the General Secretary’s continuous stay in office after his retirement by directing that the General Secretary leaves office latest by 30th September, 2019.

The decision further indicated, that Mr David Ofori Acheampong is not just to leave office by the 30th September, 2019 but also to present a New General Secretary to the National Council latest by the 30th September, 2019.

To this end the National President was tasked by the National Executive to write to General Secretary on the new decisions for compliance and also to ensure that Council is constituted for the presentation of the General Secretary to it.

About GNAT General Secretaryship Position

Two structures operate within the GNAT. These are:

i. the Political hierarchy which has responsibility for the formulation of policy guidelines and executive direction;

ii. the Administrative set-up, which is the secretariat that implements the policies and programmes of the Association.

The Political (Structure) hierarchy is based on effective representation where the representatives carry the mandate of the members they represent.

It is therefore necessary for members at the various levels to be seriously involved in electing worthy representatives.

The Administrative set-up is headed by the General Secretary as the Chief Executive Officer.

This position is by appointment. She/He is assisted in the performance of his/her duties by deputies and other officers who have specific schedules at the national level.

Administrative functions in the regions are handled by regional secretaries and their assistants.

There are also full-time secretaries who are responsible for administrative functions in all the districts.
