The Ghana Education Service (GES) and the SIC Life Insurance Company have donated a total amount of GHC126,000 to Seven beneficiaries of the GES -SIC Life Insurance Policy.
Each of the Seven beneficiaries receive an amount of GHC18,000 as a benefit from their GHC10.00 deduction that took place in June 2018.
The amount was presented to each beneficiary either personally or to a family member in the case of death of the beneficiary.
The donation took place at the Launch of the policy at the GNAT HALL in Accra on Monday June 24,2019.
The Deductions
The GES -SIC Life Group Insurance Programme started in June 2018 with a deduction of GHC10.00 each from the salaries of all GES Staff.
Unfortunately, Teacher Unions representing the staff of the Ghana Education Service boycotted the idea.
The Unions boycotted the idea claiming their members were not sensitized before the implementation of the programme.
The programme was halted for the GES to sensitize the staff of which exit forms were issued for Staff to make informed decisions.
The Beneficiaries
The Seven beneficiaries include the late Mr George Somuah Bosompem, an RME teacher at the Salvation Army Basic School at Asiakwa in the Eastern Region.
He died in May this year after being allegedly attacked by Six young men which led to his death.
The second beneficiary was the late Mr Amos Aboagye of the Akim Oda Anglican Basic School.
Sadly, he was electrocuted and died instantly when trying to assist the school children to remove a bucket that had fallen into the school well.
The third beneficiary was the late Mr Sampson Amoako Attah Narh.
He met his untimely death while on his way to school at Apau Wawase in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region.
He was killed by a VIP bus while on his motorbike to school.
The fourth beneficiary was the late Mr. Kwame Kyei, who met his untimely death in October 2018.
He was a teacher from the Mangase Senior Hgh School and got involved in an Accident in a bus carrying 56 students from Adawaso to Manya Krobo.
Also on the list of beneficiaries is the late Mr Bruno Ayitey from Kodiabe in the Osudoku District.
He died earlier this year.
Other beneficiaries include,Madam Yonebeth Anadi , a teacher from the Volta Region who is diagnosed of a critical ilness.
She was given a cheque of the equivalent of $3,500.00
The final beneficiary was Mr Kofi Nartey,a teacher from Klu Agogo in the Yilo Krobo District.
He was attacked by armed robbers in his house who shot his right arm resulting in an amputation.
He has expressed his desire to get a prosthetic arm so he can return to the classroom.
The Launch
The GES-SIC Life Group Insurance Policy has been officially launched on Monday,June 24,2019 at the GNAT Hall in Accra .
The policy was launched by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service,Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwah.
The Director General ,during the launch indicated that the Insurance policy was to promote the welfare of both Teaching and Non-Teaching staff .
He also emphasized the policy was optional of which exit forms were provided for GES staff who do not want to be part of the Group Life Insurance Policy.
Professor Opoku-Amankwah explained that “as part of the sensitization program, exit forms were provided for GES staff who do not want to be part of this Group Life Insurance Policy.
“The default position was to put every staff on this policy and give room for those who may wish to be excluded to opt out of this program.” He remarked.
Professor Opoku-Amankwah further disclosed “as at June 15, 2019, about 20,000 staff have submitted exit forms to be excluded from the policy which will commence in July 2019”
The GES-SIC Group Life Insurance will commence in July 2019.
Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Wyns-Dogbe , the Managing Director of SIC Life disclosed that even though there was only one deduction in June 2018, they are paying claims to some beneficiaries and to relations of deceased staff to affirm their commitment to the implementation of the policy.
About the Policy
Under the GES-SIC Policy, all teaching and non-teaching staff of the Service who die or suffer a permanent disability would be given a cover of up to ¢18,000 depending on the medical report.
Those who suffer illness such as cancer, stroke, major organ transplant and kidney failure would be given a cover of up ¢9,000. A critical illness that renders a member totally and permanently disabled receives a full pay-out of ¢18,000.
This will attract a monthly premium of ¢10 per month for a member and there is also a cashback of 10% if no claim is made within three years and a monthly premium.
