Gbewaa College 2019 Batch of Trainees accused Authorities of ‘Pocketing’ their Allowances

Authorities of the Gbewaa College of Education(University College) have been accused of intensionally pocketing allowances of the 2019 Batch of Trainees.

In a statement issued by the students on October 15,2019,the students  expressed their displeasure on the way the college has disbursed their level 300 second semester feeding component of the allowance to them without any clear explanation.

”Before the reinstatement of the allowance, It was agreed that 50% of teacher trainees allowance equivalent to GH₵ 200.00 would be paid directly to the school as our feeding fee.”

”However, level three students who are always doing their teaching practice outside the college will always receive that feeding component of the allowance when it goes to the college since they are not going to be fed by the college during this period of their practice.” The statement said.

”The first semester feeding fee of GH₵ 784.00 was given to the college and it was used as part payment of our third year fees of GH₵ 909.00 leaving a balance of GH₵ 125.00 to complete the payment.”

”Not just quite long, the second semester component also came and per the calculations, they were supposed to deduct GH₵ 125.00 from the GH₵ 784.00 and another deduction of GH₵ 10.00 for a 3- day stay on the campus after we completed and we went back to write our licensure exams leaving a balance of GH₵ 649.00 for it to be given to us.”

”This is rather unfortunate that out of the GH₵ 649.00 we were all expecting as our balance from the college, it is only GH₵ 350.00 that they have agreed to give it to each student without explaining why it is so to us.”

They  students also accused the college of going  further to deduct a graduation fee of GH₵ 250.00 without consulting them or their  SRC board.

”Meanwhile this fee is supposed to be paid next year when the time for the graduation is due. Now our question is how was the college taking its graduation fee from the students when the allowance was scrapped?” They asked.

”Can they let us have our allowance so that at the right time that graduation fee is taking from us? All effort to get a better explanation from them has proven futile. They don’t just want to listen to our cry.” They students lamented.
