Former UG SRC President and one other aspirant disqualified from 2019 USAG elections

Former President of University of Ghana Student Representative Council (SRC), Sylvester Amoako and one other aspirant vying to be executives of the University Students Association of Ghana (USAG) have been disqualified by the vetting panel for constitutional breaches on the part of the applicants.

Sylvester Amoako who is circularly known as SLY and Akosua Amponsah Yeboah who were vying for the Presidential and Womens’ Commissioner positions respectively have been disqualified from the yet to be held elections for the 2019 USAG Elections.

The vetting process which took place on August 22, 2019, saw a 7-member panel vet all aspirants for the National Executive Council.

Grounds for Disqualification

SLY who according to the Vetting panel was disqualified for not submitting his nomination and failure to present himself before the vetting panel.

As enshrined in Article 56 clause 1 of the USAG Constitution, an aspirant is expected to present him or herself before the vetting panel after which is eligible to contest in the elections.

“56. (1) Without prejudice to any provision in this constitution, any student aspiring to any position shall be subjected to vetting by a 7-member committee constituted by NEC before congress.”

In the case of Women’s Commissioner aspirant, Akosua Amponsah Yeboah, she was barred from the elections on grounds of CGPA requirements directed by the Constitutional Instruments guiding the elections. In addition to that, Ms. Yeboah was dispelled according to article 55 clause 1 of the constitution which prevents anyone who has been lawfully convicted of crime I Ghana from running for office as a USAG Executive.

“55. A person shall not be qualified to stand for a National Executive position if he— (1) Has been convicted under any crime in Ghana”

According to the Electoral calendar, the election is expected to take place on Sunday, August 25 by congress.
