District Level Scholarship Scheme launched, more scholarships coming- Minister

Minister for Western Region, Dr Kwabena Okeyere Darko Mensah has hinted that some deliberate action is being taken to create more financing opportunities for tertiary education in the country.

This he believed would help improve the human capacities of the country for national development.

Speaking at the National launch of the District Level Scholarship Scheme today in Takoradi, Dr. Okyere Darko assured of his commitment to explore innovative and sustainable funding schemes to support tertiary education, adding that considerations are being taken with industry players in the extractive sector to commit to it.

“As the Western Regional Minister, I shall do all I can to get more resources to support learning in Ghana and all over the world. As i speak, plans are far advanced to get more scholarships from the oil and gas, the mining companies for schools in Ghana” he mentioned.

Hon. Dr. Okyere Darko added that all these interventions are geared towards increasing accessibility to quality education in the country.

He explained that finance had mainly been a major impediment to advancing educational career in the country, one he maintained must be resolved.

“Bridging this gab requires pragmatic interventions in securing alternative for tertiary education hence the introduction of the district level scholarship scheme to increase accessibility to scholarship opportunities” he stated.

Statistics available reveals that Ghana’s Gross Tertiary Enrollment Ratio falls stands at 16.19 percent; far below that of South Korea’s 93.7 percent. With a continued investment in education for the country, the gab is expected to close and improve.
