Deaf and blind student graduates with First Class at UEW

A 30-year-old student from University of Education Winneba(UEW), Slyvia Abena Peprah who pursued a two-year diploma programme in Community-Based Rehabilitation and Disability Studies has graduated with a First Class honours.

The Vice Chancellor of UEW, Rev. Father. Prof. Anthony Afful Broni stated that the institution has provided this unique student the platform to prove to Ghana that the loss of both her sight and hearing is not a barrier to her attaining University.

In view of this, he revealed that the University continues to be very supportive of her amazing achievement and hereby offers to pay for her accommodation and tuition fees as she proceeds to pursue her post-diploma (Bachelor of Education) programme, in the same course in the next academic year.

He observed that, UEW is setting the record as the first University in the nation to graduate a deaf and blind student.

Rev. Father. Prof. Afful Broni announced this when he graduated 16,489 students who successfully completed their programmes of study in the 2017/2018 academic year at the 24th Congregation of UEW.

He revealed that the institution continues to admit and train many more young adults with different disabilities which is a unique opportunity only available at UEW.

According to him, with 13 faculties and 49 academic departments at Winneba, Ajumako, Kumasi and Asante Mampong campuses, the University will continue to expand Infrastructure to accommodate the ever-increasing numbers of new applicants.

To this end, he said the institution is proud to partner government in welcoming the first batch of the beneficiaries of the free Senior High School (SHS) policy in the next academic year adding that the major source of funding at the UEW is the School fees.

He, therefore, extended his profound gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for supporting the Institution in efforts at building UEW into a strong, effective and efficient global centre of excellence for teacher education.

Graduands were urged never look down themselves, neither to allow anyone else to disregard or disrespect.

“No one should take advantage of you by using you to do their dirty jobs. Be yourself, the amazing strong and smart young men and women that you have become” he added.
