COVID-19: Teacher Unions call on Gov’t to meet with WAEC to reschedule BECE,WASSCE 2020

Four Teacher Unions have asked the government to reconsider its decision to allow Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to continue going to school despite the decision of the President to shut down all Schools due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic.

The Teacher Unions include the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-GH).

In a statement released on March 17, 2020, the Unions called on the government to engage the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) member states to consider a possible change in the WASSCE Time Table.

Explaining their reasons for the closure of schools including the Candidates, the Teachers said that taking cognisance of the fact that the schools could be used as incubation centres of the Coronavirus, the unlimited social interactions and movements which take place could affect the learners.

In that regard, the Teacher Unions said Ghanaians are culturally hand-shaking and face touching people.

The Unions further said the country’s health facilities are limited in capacity and could affect the learners should the unfortunate happened.

The Unions thereby pleaded with the government to include the BECE and WASSCE Candidates n the closure or shut down of the schools.

NAGRAT’s Earlier Call

Earlier , the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has been pushing for the government to order all final year students in junior high and senior high schools and their teachers to go home.

resident of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu, however, said the decision to keep the final year students and teachers on campus is unacceptable.

GNAT demands for Protective Gears

Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) is to engage the Ghana Education Service (GES) to discuss plans for the deployment of occupational health and safety kits to protect teachers against the novel coronavirus.

GNAT wants government to as soon as possible provide its members with Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) as detailed in section 118 of the labour law.
