A law lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) has called for a focused discussion on fighting sexual harassment rather than narrowing it to just lecturers.
Justice Srem-Sai said it would be unfair to direct all attention to two lecturers at the University of Ghana cited in a BBC documentary for sexually harassing students.
He said this will be in total neglect of the “bigger picture”.
”As a society, we should take a big step outside the video and address the sexual harassment in our society,” he told Daniel Dadzie, the host of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Wednesday.
Mr Srem-Sai comments follow the BBC Africa Eye’s “Sex for Grades” documentary about sexual harassment in some universities in West Africa.
Prof. Ransford Gyampo of the Political Science Department and Dr Paul Kwame Butakor a lecturer at the Department of Teacher Education of the School of Education and Leadership were filmed making sexual advances to ‘students’ who were actually undercover investigators.
Less than 48 hours after the broadcast theUniversity of Ghana interdicted the two lecturers. They are also expected to face the university’s Anti-sexual harassment committee probing the scandal.
The GIMPA law lecturer said the documentary is to serve as a reminder to the society to increase the fight against sexual harassment which is already a major canker in the country.
“What the video has done is to bring the subject to the table and find a way to resolve it” Justice Srem-Sai stated.
