Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, Her Ladyship Justice Sophia A. B. Akuffo has reiterated her position on legal education in the country which she insists will only focus on quality and not mass production of lawyers.
Her Ladyship Justice Sophia Akuffo was speaking on the topic “Questing for Excellence” at the 2019 Alumni lecture held at the University of Ghana.
“We need quality lawyers, not mass-produced lawyers. Taking smartphones as an example, we all know that we have smartphones and there are smartphones. The point I’m making is that it is not the mass production that is wrong but the input is what matters most.”
She added that excellence should not be personalized but rather be pursued with collective efforts.
The Chief Justice also stressed that the quest for excellence should not be misplaced and further called for the country to zealously work towards achieving this goal.
“So One person’s idea of what is excellent may not be of the same height as compared with that of another. The perspective from which each one views excellent is vastly different from the view of excellence in the other person. However, it’s more than a year and it takes great efforts to achieve excellence, this means that excellence can never be misplaced.”
Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo earlier this month strongly stated that existing systems and structures for the training of lawyers in the country will remain unchanged despite public outcry.
Her comments came on the back of this year’s law school entrance examinations which saw only 128 students passing out of the 1,820 candidates who sat for the exams.
The monumental failure recorded generated mass public outcry including an organized protest by aggrieved law students on October 7, 2019.
