Ferdinand | EducationGhana | December 28| WAEC Receives GH₵35 Million Boost for WASSCE 2024 Results Processing Amid Challenges
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the receipt of an additional GH₵35 million from the Ghanaian government through the Ministry of Education (MoE) to expedite the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results for school candidates.
In a statement issued by WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, the council confirmed receiving the funds on December 25, 2024.
The financial boost aims to support the completion of scanning objective answer cards and processing results for the over 460,000 candidates who participated in the examination.
Results Expected by Month-End
WAEC assured stakeholders that efforts are underway to release the WASSCE results by the end of December.
The council emphasized its commitment to fulfilling its mandate despite ongoing challenges, expressing gratitude to the Ministry of Education for the additional funding.
However, WAEC appealed to the government to release the remaining funds required to pay supervisors, invigilators, script checkers, and suppliers of examination materials.
These obligations, alongside operational demands, remain critical to achieving their goals.

Operational Hurdles Threaten December 29 Deadline
Despite receiving the additional funds, WAEC’s Head of Public Relations expressed skepticism about meeting the December 29, 2024, deadline for releasing the results.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News, he revealed that malfunctioning scanning machines and financial constraints have slowed progress.
As of now, only 45% of the scanning work has been completed, with 55% still pending. The council urgently needs additional funds to repair malfunctioning machines and optimize operations.
“The scanners are not working at full throttle. We need funds to fix the machines and call back all staff to speed up the process. Without this support, meeting the deadline seems unlikely,” he noted.
Massive Candidate Participation
The 2024 WASSCE commenced on August 5, 2024, and concluded on September 20, 2024. A total of 460,611 candidates, comprising 212,954 boys and 247,657 girls from 1,003 schools, sat for the examination across 1,000 centers nationwide.
Commitment Amidst Financial Challenges
Despite the hurdles, WAEC reiterated its commitment to delivering accurate and timely results for all candidates.
The council also extended its best wishes to stakeholders during the festive season and thanked them for their continued support.
The 2024 WASSCE results are anticipated to mark a significant milestone for candidates, educators, and parents, with all eyes on the council to meet the looming deadline.
