Valley View University explains issues regarding the Phasing out of GA Language as a Subject

Management of the Valley View University (VVU) has explained their reason for the phasing out of GA Language as a subject at its Basic School department.

The Valey View University (VVU) Basic School in Accra has indicated it shall phase out the teaching and Learning of GA as a Ghanaian Language due to the lack of teaching staff to take the subject.

The VVU Basic School in a letter dated February 3, 2021, to all parents of the Learners in the school indicated, that the management of the Basic School is gradually phasing out GA as a Ghanaian Language starting from the 2021 Academic year.

The management of the school said their decision was due to their difficulty in getting qualified teachers to teach the subject.

According to the letter, the unfortunate decision will affect pupils from Basic 1 to Basic 3 only.

 

Public Outcry

The issue which was first published in the media got the public talking, including chiefs and indigenes of the GA Traditional Council.

The public questioned the decision of the school to phase out GA Language in a GA community whilst there were GA Language teachers looking for employment all over the country.

Management’s Response

The management of the School, in a letter dated February 10, 2021, to all parents apologized to parents whose sensibilities were being hurt by their earlier communication.

The VVU said it did not intend any harm or malice to any ethnic group or persons.

The management said their earlier decision was based on the unavailability of qualified GA Langage teachers for a period of time.

The management thereby assured all parents of their efforts to get qualified teachers for all subjects as early as practically possible.
