UG: ‘Sex for Grades’ report to be released this week – Public Affairs Director

Report submitted by the five-member fact finding committee set up to investigate the two UG lecturers fingered in the BBC ‘Sex for Grades’ documentary will be released this week. This is according to Head of Public Affairs at the University of Ghana, Mad. Stella Amoa.

Mad. Amoa debunked reports circulating on social media and some websites that the lecturers featured in the documentary have been exonerated since the committee report is yet to be released to the public.

Management is yet to meet and let us know what the recommendations are; nothing is out in terms of an official position. Last week was a busy one for us at the university and management will definitely meet on the report and we will let members of the (university) community and indeed, the public know what the recommendations are.

She insisted that it would be prudent to wait for facts before making any declaration on the reports.

It is no use just debunking, and then to not say what it is, it would be good to have full details, especially when we know that members of the community and the public are all ears to know what the recommendations are.

BBC Publishes ‘Sex for Grades’ 

The BBC on October 7, 2019, aired an investigative piece aimed at exposing issues of sexual harassment in some West African universities. The documentary implicated some lecturers at the University of Ghana and the University of Lagos for allegedly exchanging academic merits for sexual favors.

Among those fingered, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, a Political Science lecturer and Dr. Paul Kwame Butakor of the Department of Teacher Education of the School of Education and Leadership at the University of Ghana were interdicted by the university pending investigations.

The five-member fact finding committee, chaired by Her Ladyship, retired Justice Vida Akoto-Bamfo was set up to conduct an inquiry into the matter. The committee came up with a report with recommendations which was submitted to the Vice Chancellor on November 12, 2019.
