The Akuafo Hall Senate says it will engage stakeholders to determine the way forward should the outgoing Junior Common Room (JCR) President, Kwame Amo Ntow Fianko fail to hand over to newly elected hall executives.
The Akuafo Hall court on Saturday, June 26, 2021, ordered Ntow Fianko to hand over as JCR President by 10 pm on Monday, June 28, 2021, over his failure to cede the mantle of leadership of the hall to newly elected executives, 21 days after the conduct of elections as stipulated in Article 11 clause 2 of the Akuafo Hall Constitution.
In an interview on Campus Exclusive, Speaker of the Akuafo Hall Senate David Oppong Quarshie said they expected the Akuafo Hall JCR president who also doubles as the Acting University of Ghana Student Represent Council president (UG SRC) to have handed over within 21 days elapsed however that did not happen
He mentioned that “no one had approached senate or my outfit to either seek for an extension for any sundry or even proffer a time they intended to do that”.
David Osei Quarshie described reasons given by other outgoing JCR executives such as “signatory transfer” to the JCR accounts as “frivolous”.
He however alleged that the Legal advisor of Akuafo Hall said “His Excellency Nana Amo cannot handover as at now because he some other activities or duties at the SRC for which his handing over will mean that he has to step down from the seat of the SRC”.
Last year, the Executive Committee comprising all active Junior Common Room (JCR) Presidents triggered Article 25 of the SRC constitution to form interim executives to steer the affairs of students.
In circumstances where the SRC is unable to organize an election and the tenure of an incumbent officer is about to expire article 25 clause 7 a. i. allows for ‘One of the JCR Presidents of the Halls of residence as Acting SRC President’.
“Article 25 (7) (a). In the event of the removal from office en-block of the Executive Officers under this article, the remaining members of the Executive Committee shall nominate and/or appoint: (I) One of the JCR Presidents of the Halls of residence as Acting SRC President;”
David Osei Quarshie believes that Senate should have been engaged before this unfolding impasse.
He said consultations with other senate members will be done to find the way forward if Ntow Fianko does not hand over today
“if at the end of the day nothing of that sort happens then we would collectively come in and do what needs to be done. That will be subject to consultation,” he said
