The Ag. Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Andy Ofori-Birikorang has said that the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), is putting in a lot of ideas and innovation to make sure that as many graduates as possible do not become unemployed when they leave the University.
He stated that the University enjoins its products to open their minds to greater and higher forms of ideas and ideals which UEW represents. He added that university education is learning about the universe and not learning about some small subject areas. “You are supposed to learn about the universe, therefore, we will open your minds to take on a lot of ideas that you have never thought of.”
The Ag. Pro-Vice-Chancellor was welcoming fresh undergraduate and postgraduate students for the 2021 academic year, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni, during an Intensive Pre-academic Orientation Programme (IPOP) held at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre and Amu Theatre.

“We are all aware that now, even though as a nation, we are graduating more students; we also have students who are calling themselves unemployed graduate students but I want to assure you that this University is putting in a lot of ideas, innovation, and renovation to make sure that as many graduates as possible do not become unemployed when they leave this University,” he stressed.
Fresh undergraduate students
According to the Ag. Pro-Vice-Chancellor, UEW has for the first time seen a high number of freshmen attending the orientation programme. “For the first time, the numbers here are in excess of 6,000 and we have two venues already having this programme at the same time. So, you can imagine that we are hitting in excess of 10,000 because some of us here have gone through the Free Senior High School system and have come to the University with so much ease.”
Prof. Ofori-Birikorang indicated that UEW is the nation’s largest and fastest-growing nest for hutching the calibre of teachers needed for driving and directing development in Ghana. He noted, “Let me say, without mincing words, that UEW is the leading learning hub in relation to our preparations for your joining us at a time when conventional teaching and learning environment fall short in meeting students’ needs”.
The Ag. Pro-Vice-Chancellor admonished attendees to pay rapt attention to the presentations and also give the organisers their maximum cooperation. He cautioned against defiant behaviours towards the COVID-19 pandemic and advised them to adhere strictly to the safety protocols laid down by the Government and the University.
“I urge you to explore our homely campus environment and make the most of what we offer in anticipation that in a few years to come we shall celebrate your successful completion. I am confident that we will enjoy each other’s company and you will be glad you chose to come to the University of Education, Winneba, and the University of Excellence,” he remarked.
Surv. Paul Osei-Barima Esq
The Registrar, Surv. Paul Osei-Barima Esq., on his part, reiterated that university education prepares one for life. “It is universal education and you need to learn everything from here; because after here, you are going straight into real life and some of you will hold high positions in this country. This place can help you to progress but if care is not taken, you can destroy your life when you associate yourself with bad company.”
There were other relevant and interesting presentations on topics such as time management, health issues, recreation and sports, procedures for online registration of courses and transfer of credits, library and e-learning in tertiary education, counselling services in UEW, and security issues.
Facilitators
The topics were responsibly handled by competent facilitators namely Prof. Dandy George Dampson, Dr. Beth Offei-Awuku, Dr. Kwame Kyere Diabour, Mr. Raymond Bentum Boison, Mr. Viscount B. Nortey Buer, Dr. M. K. Namale and Mr. Bartholomew Alubokin.
Also present were the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Ernest Kwasi Amponsah; Vice-Deans, Student Affairs (Winneba and Ajumako Campuses), Dr. E. T. Amanor-Lartey, Dr. Juliana Daniels, and Dr. Kwasi Adomako; Directors, Deans, Deputy Registrars and Lecturers.
