The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), on Friday, April 11, 2025, hosted a transformative Public Lecture Series at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre on the North Campus. This high-level event, themed “Empowering Minds, Shaping Futures for 21st-Century Education,” brought together distinguished thought leaders, policymakers, academics, and students to explore the future of education in Ghana and Africa.

PLO Lumumba Headlines Lecture with Bold Vision

 

Renowned Pan-Africanist Prof. P.L.O. Lumumba was the main speaker, delivering an electrifying lecture that called on African nations to decolonize their education systems, invest in innovation, and empower the next generation of critical thinkers. He challenged universities to lead the charge in shaping ethical leadership and purposeful education policies that fit African realities.

Haruna Iddrisu Calls for Stronger Institutional Reforms

Ghana’s Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, served as the Guest of Honour. In his address, he emphasized the importance of continuous inspections in senior high schools to curb the influx of weapons and prohibited items, especially in light of recent safety concerns. He also reiterated government’s plan to phase out the double-track system by 2027 and called for stronger partnerships to uplift public education.

 

Expert Contributions Spark Ideas for Action

The event was hosted by UEW Vice-Chancellor Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual and chaired by Dr. Edmond Moukala, UNESCO Representative in Ghana. Renowned leadership expert Dr. Samuel Koranteng-Pipim also spoke on transforming educational institutions through visionary leadership, ethical behavior, and strategic mentorship.

Throughout the day, breakout sessions, student poster exhibitions, and networking activities engaged over 800 participants in interactive discussions.
