The ceremony brought together distinguished health experts to talk about the prospects there are in protecting oneself with the new vaccine the world has discovered and the need to be vaccinated.

The Director of Health Services, University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Dr. Beth Offei-Awuku, who delivered the keynote address, pinpointed out certain adverse attitudes some indigenes exhibit towards the COVID-19 safety protocols. She expounded on the importance of the vaccine for human intake and urged all and sundry to keep adhering to the safety protocols.

Dr. Beth Offei-Awuku

“In this pandemic nowhere is cool. We are blessed as a nation to be accessing vaccines for target communities. We also know that later, the whole nation is targeted to receive the vaccination. Unfortunately, since the roll-out of vaccination, we have noticed a community fear and we’ve also noticed that even when our target is 60% vaccination of the target group, we have not reached that target. I will here talk about the importance of the vaccine,” she noted.

The Head, Department of Ewe Education, Mr. Pascal Kpodo, in an interview on the sideline of the programme, revealed that his outfit organised the programme to clear the misconceptions people have about the COVID-19 vaccination.

“This programme is motivated by the negative comments that are being passed about the vaccination programme that is currently going on. We realised that all over the world there are people who are a bit sceptical about taking the vaccine. UEW being an educational institution, our students must be leaders in community sensitisation. So, we put this programme together so that we give the information necessary to convince people that there is no harm in taking the vaccine and that the vaccine will only come to save us from the pandemic,” he stated.

Lecturer in the Department, Ms. Georgina Sapaty, remarked that thinking about the way forward at a ceremony like what the Department had undertaken would enhance education on the right to know more about the disease.

“Today, a year on after the pandemic, the Department deems it a good idea to mark this novel coronavirus scourge that has decimated nations across the globe and it’s still ravaging on. I will urge that we take pride in the providence of the Almighty God who has seen us through the one-year journey with COVID-19 without any mishaps on us as individuals. Listen attentively to the advice and teachings that will flow at this ceremony; and rejoice that there is hope for the future of our institutions in Ghana, UEW, the College and the Department in particular,” She said.

Also present to support the event were the Principal, College of Languages Education, Prof. Dominic Kwaku Danso Mensah; Dean, Faculty of Ghanaian Languages Education, Prof. Charles Owu-Ewie; Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Ernest Kwasi Amponsah; College Registrar, Mr. Bediako Osei-Appau; Lecturers, staff and students.
