The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has celebrated its famous Hero, Prof. David Teye Doku, whose research works Contributed to the University’s sterling ranking in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking as the topmost-ranked University in Ghana and West Africa, 4th in Africa.
The university took to its Facebook page on July 15, 2023, to show respect to the patriot of the University, Prof. David Teye Doku.

Who is Prof. David Teye Doku?

• Started basic education at Okwenya LA Primary School
• Attended Roman Catholic Basic School, Somanya, Eastern Region
•Had secondary education at Ghanata Secondary School, Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region
• began his academic career in 2008 as a researcher at Tampere University in Finland
• Appointed as a lecturer at UCC in 2011
• Promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2013
• Adjudged Best Evolved Researcher in 2019
• Promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 2020
•Listed by AD World Scientist and University Ranking (Scientific Index) as the top 11th and 12th scholar in Ghana.
•Named by Research.com, a ranking firm, as the star researcher in Ghana in 2022
• Has over 45,000 citations of his publications, making him first in UCC’s all-time list of contributors to the UCC’s rankings in terms of research influence. His H-index of 42 is the highest any UCC scholar has on Scopus.
• Promoted to the rank of Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health in 2022
•Contributed to UCC’s sterling ranking in the 2022 and the 2023 Times Higher Education World University Ranking as the topmost-ranked University in Ghana and West Africa, 4th in Africa.
• Received five Research Excellence awards for his contribution to the sterling performance of UCC in the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Ranking.
•Topmost scholar in UCC with nominal citations of papers all time (17335 citations); topmost scholar in UCC with nominal citations of papers from 2016-20 (16365 citations)
•Successfully produced 10 PhD graduates either as a principal supervisor or a co-supervisor.
•Appointed Director of the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy at UCC in 2022
• Delivered inaugural lecture in 2023 on the topic: ” The Causes of the Causes: Is Society the Producer of its own Health and ill-Health?”
•Currently an Elder of the Apostolic Church-Ghana and serves as a patron of the UCC branch of the Apostolic Church-Ghana, Students and Associates (APOSA-UCC).
*Married to Mrs Laura Doku and blessed with two children.

Profile of Prof. David Teye Doku

Prof. David Teye Doku holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Public Health. He is a Professor at the Department of Population and Health, University of Cape Coast, Ghana, where he teaches courses in Epidemiology and Public Health, including Social Epidemiology, Epidemiology, Advanced Epidemiology, Urban Health and Global Health at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Prof. Doku is also the Director of the Directorate of Research Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC), UCC an Adjunct Professor (Docent) in Public Health at the Tampere University, Finland.

Prof. Doku is an Associate Editor of the reputable BMC Public Health journal (Global Health Section). He has over sixty scientific publications in reputable journals.

These publications have considerable non-self citations. His main research interest includes: adolescents health; health inequalities, maternal, neonatal and child health in low and- middle-income countries; tobacco control; and reproductive health.

In addition, Prof. Doku has produced a number of PhD graduates as a principal supervisor or a co-supervisor and has served as an external examiner for a couple of PhD dissertations in Africa, Europe and Australia.

He has also successfully supervised several Masters theses. Prof. Doku is an external examiner for the University of Ghana, Legon, i.e. the School of Public Health, The Centre for Migration Studies and the Department of Geography and Resource Development.

Prof. Doku has won a number of external research grants, consultancy contracts and personal awards. He has research and academic networks in several countries, including South Africa, Norway, Canada, the USA, Germany, Sweden and Finland.
