TopAfric Hands Over New School Block to Tongor-Tsita, Transforms Education in Rural Volta

Ferdinand EducationGhana | September 22 | TopAfric Hands Over New School Block to Tongor-Tsita, Transforms Education in Rural Volta

TopAfric, a Hamburg-based non-profit founded by Desmond John Beddy, has handed over a six-unit classroom block with a toilet facility to Tongor-Tsita in the Volta Region. The project is part of its wider effort to improve education, health, water, and sanitation in rural Ghana.

A New Dawn for Tongor-Tsita

A bright six-unit classroom block now stands in Tongor-Tsita, a farming community in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region, where children once studied in makeshift sheds that collapsed under heavy rains or left them exposed to the blazing sun.   The new facility, complete with wide windows, solid roofing, and a four-seater toilet facility, marks a turning point for pupils, teachers, and parents. A borehole project is also underway to provide safe drinking water, easing the daily burden of fetching from unsafe sources. For the people of Tongor-Tsita, these are more than projects—they are lifelines.

TopAfric’s Growing Footprint in Ghana

The transformation is the work of TopAfric, a Hamburg-based non-profit founded by Ghanaian entrepreneur and philanthropist Desmond John Beddy.   What began as a diaspora platform offering support services to Africans in Germany has evolved into a development force in rural Ghana, targeting education, health, water, and sanitation.   In 2023, TopAfric handed over a six-unit classroom block with a storeroom, teachers’ office, and borehole in Adaklu-Blidokope.   In Hikpo, a borehole was completed before the local health post was upgraded into a fully equipped facility.   In Agortive, the organization constructed a six-unit classroom block with a computer lab, introducing children to digital literacy for the first time.   In Anyarko, plans for a borehole gave the community renewed hope for safe water.

Beyond Buildings: A Focus on Sustainability

What sets TopAfric apart is its attention to detail and sustainability. Schools are not just structures—they are fully furnished with desks, chairs, and whiteboards, ready for use from day one. Health facilities are built as functional treatment centers, not symbolic structures.   Desmond John Beddy consistently emphasizes that Ghana’s development challenge lies not only in building but also in maintaining infrastructure. TopAfric therefore promotes: Routine maintenance culture Modest budgets for repairs Training for local custodians to ensure long-term use This approach ensures that every classroom, borehole, or health post remains useful for generations.

Diaspora-Driven Development

Rooted in the diaspora, TopAfric draws international support from Africans abroad through funding, advocacy, and expertise, while mobilizing local communities to take ownership of the projects. This model demonstrates how the diaspora can play a transformative role beyond remittances, shaping sustainable development in ways governments alone cannot achieve.   Visible Impact Across Communities   The results of TopAfric’s interventions are already clear:   Children study without fear of classrooms collapsing in storms.   Families fetch safe water within walking distance, reducing waterborne diseases.   Health workers deliver care in equipped facilities instead of makeshift structures.   Each project creates a ripple effect that improves education, health, and livelihoods, restoring dignity and creating opportunities.

The Road Ahead

From Adaklu-Blidokope to Tongor-Tsita, Hikpo, Agortive, and Anyarko, TopAfric is proving that change is possible when vision meets commitment.   The journey is far from over, but each new project tells a story of dignity restored, opportunities created, and lives transformed. With continued support, the organization is determined to keep building—one school, one borehole, one health facility at a time—until access to education, clean water, and healthcare becomes a reality for all.
