TEWU Leaders Walk Out of Salary Meeting in Frustration, Strike Continues
Leaders of the Teacher and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) left a meeting with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission in frustration as attempts to address their salary concerns once again faltered, prolonging their ongoing indefinite strike.
Demand for Salary Equity
TEWU initiated the strike a few days ago, citing the need to rectify disparities in the salaries of junior and senior staff members at public universities. Despite ongoing discussions with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, TEWU remains dissatisfied with the progress made in addressing their grievances.
National Labour Commission’s Directive
The National Labour Commission (NLC) intervened, directing TEWU members to return to work while the Commission works to resolve their placement issues on the Single Spine Salary Structure. The NLC emphasized ongoing talks between TEWU leaders and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, urging immediate cessation of the strike action.
TEWU’s Response
However, TEWU’s National Chairman, Peter Lumor, expressed disappointment with the handling of their concerns during the meeting with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. Lumor highlighted the absence of key stakeholders and dissatisfaction with the placement process, signalling that the strike would persist.
Continued Strike Action
In light of the unresolved issues and dissatisfaction with the negotiation process, TEWU leaders affirmed that the strike would continue until their concerns are adequately addressed. The union plans to convene to discuss the next steps forward in their quest for equitable salaries for all members.
As the standoff between TEWU and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission persists, the impact on public university operations and the broader education sector remains a pressing concern.
