Teachers are confused but pretend to be implementing the New Curriculum – AFfED

African Foundation for Educational Development (AFfED) has said that pre-tertiary teachers are confused but pretend to be implementing the New Standard-Based Curriculum to satisfy their employer, the Ghana Education Service (GES).

AFfED in a statement issued on March 17, 2021, has joined the call for the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to expedite actions in the provision of quality textbooks for the implementation of the new  Standard-Based Curriculum.

GHANA’S QUEST TO DEVELOP WILL BE AN ILLUSION IF OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM IS JEOPARDIZED.

“Education is a sine qua non for economic growth” since the students of today will live the dream of national development.

It’s been about two years since the implementation of the Standards-Based Curriculum which is expected to lift Ghana’s education system to compete with international standards of education.

With the implementation, one would expect the Ghana Education Service and the National Council for Curriculum Assessment to adhere to all rudiments binding curriculum development accompanied by relevant textbooks and standardized assessment framework.
This is not so in our case as Ghanaians.

The few textbooks that have found their way into the books market are been found derogatory and unacceptable to equip our students mentally, physically and emotionally to propel the agenda of development after two solid years of waiting.

Curriculum as a medium through which education is provided has a crucial role to play in the transformation of our society and that must never be undermined.

Schools are likely to vacate in April but the NaCCA has so far not come out with an assessment plan that would complement the Standards-Based Curriculum.

Honestly, Ghana has had a checkered situation in the implementation of the Standards-Based Curriculum, seeming the agency wasn’t much ready to issue the implementation.

The curriculum can never work in isolation with the textbooks and a complementing assessment procedure.

One of the very important hinges of education is the availability of relevant textbooks.

It is important to note that teachers are confused and are pretending to be teaching.
You can imagine what harm our future economic developers are facing.

To ensure that the Standards-Based Curriculum meets it’s requirements the Ghana Education Service and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment with its supervisory Ministry, Ministry of Education must;

  1. organise series of capacity building workshops to keep teachers abreast of the frame of the Standards-Based Curriculum.
  2. provide a standardized assessment procedure for use in our schools.

3.expedite the approval and the purchase of texts books for use in our schools.

The aim of making Ghana a just, free and prosperous nation requires a conscious attempt by the curriculum to inculcate very good ideals in our pupils if this is not understood then, Ghana’s quest to develop will remain an illusion if our education system is jeopardized.
