Teacher Trainees call on PrinCof to help address Blending Learning Challenges

EducationGhana, May 25, TTAG: The leadership of the Western and Central Sector of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana(TTAG-WEC) has called on the Chairperson of the Western and Central Zone of the Conference of Principals (PrinCof).

The 21st May 2021 meeting was earlier meant to show an appreciation to the PrinCof Zonal Chairperson, Dr. Philip Ntaah for his participation in the WEC Sector’s just need General Assembly which was held at the Lamplighter College of Education.

The Call

The leadership of the sector used the opportunity to draw the attention of the Chairperson to some challenges being faced by the trainees in the various colleges within the sector.

Orientation

The leadership seeks clarification on the orientation of tutors and students on online learning. The leadership indicated some challenges being faced by the students and tutors during their online lessons of which they believed there was the need for an orientation to that effect if possible.

In his response, Dr Philip Ntaah said the tutors were given an orientation before the inception of online teaching and learning.

He added, that capacity-building programs were being organized for the tutors to upgrade themselves with the exception of a few who could not join due to several factors.

He however added, that such tutors had been tasked to do so with PrinCoff ensuring that that was done successfully for a smooth implementation of the blending system.

Poor Network

The trainees also lamented the poor network that affects their participation during the online lessons which needed urgent solutions for successful implementation of the blending learning system.

Dr Philip Ntaah however responded to the network challenge issue, saying students and tutors at disadvantaged arrears had been given SD Cards with their respective courses on them.

He was quick to add, that there have been complaints that the SD card do not contain notes of which he assured the trainees that the PrinCof is working on resolving such a challenge.

Practical Courses

The trainees further elaborated on the challenges being faced by students during their practical lessons during the online lessons.

They call on their Principals to look into the problem to find a lasting solution to such problems.

Dr Ntaah in his response said some courses are interdependent on each other hence the need for both to be studied online.

Infrastructure

The students lamented the need for an additional infrastructure to support the intake of new =entrants since the third batch shall be in level 400 next Academic year with the same infrastructural facilities.

Responding to Insfrastructual challenges in the Colleges, Dr Ntaah said the College system is strictly boarding, which will make it difficult for students to stay at home and attend lectures.

He said he shall send their challenges to the PrinCoff meeting to be discussed and solutions arrived at.

He said there could be suggestions on a reduction or merging of courses to make it easier to be implemented if possible, but that will be considered by the Conference of Principals.

He however suggested to TTAG to appeal to Private Organizations such as the UK Aid, Canadian Development Agency and other organizations to help them with infrastructure whilst they wait on the government.

He suggested the trainees use the media to appeal for support using press conferences as the surest way to get private organizations to come to their aid quickly.

Feeding Fees

The trainees’ leadership calls on their principals to take a second look at the 50/50 policy in the various Colleges with regards to the feeding component of their allowances.
