The Tarkwa SHS Past Student Association (Tarpsa) in North America has awarded four immediate graduates of the School with the first-ever College Scholarships.
The old students did the presentation at the just-ended historical 60th anniversary of the school.
They are:
1. Eugene AGYIRI (Visual Arts)
2. Abigail ACHEAMPONG (Visual Arts.
3. Charles ASARE
4. Benjamin AFFUL
About the Awardees
Two of the students: Eugene AGYIRI and Abigail ACHEAMPONG, both from the Visual Arts department received full tuition from the AcManuel Family Scholarship award which is funded by Ackumey Brothers (BrothAC) Foundation.
The Scholarship Award which was created by the AcManuel family in honour of Nelly Baaba Tekyi-Mensah AcManuel was presented by Nelly AcManuel herself.
Nelly AcManuel is a level 500 Student at the University of Cape Coast and was the 2014 Presidential Award winner for being the best BECE student in the central region.
In her message, Nelly AcManuel advised the award recipients to make good use of the award, be content with the high school they went to and contribute to their Alma Mater in many ways.

“Personally I do believe that every school is a great school and is capable of producing what we call great future leaders. I for one was not granted my first choice when the placements came out but I’m still in the University now pursuing the course I’d always dreamt of pursuing. ” She said.
”Tarsco has produced many great people and a number of the dignitaries here present are representative of that. I believe that’s a lot to be proud of. I’d like to encourage us all to be proud of where we are and to make the most out of our circumstances because in the end, what really matters is hard work, perseverance and determination.” She added.
”It is my hope that the beneficiaries of this award take this opportunity very seriously and work hard to make a good future for themselves, their families and society.” She concluded.
The second award, Grace Karikari Scholarship Award was presented by Akosua Kyerewaa Danso, a student from a prestigious university in the United States, Syracuse University.
Akosua’s award was created to honour her grandmother, Mrs Grace Karikari a widow/a single mother who raised 8 children, 6 nephews and nieces, and many others without a fixed income. Yet she toiled to pay for the tuition of 8 students who graduated from Tarkwa Senior High School.
Hence the recipients of the Grace Karikari Scholarship Award are students from single-parent family homes a result of the death of one or both parents.
As a student from a minority background in the United States, Akosua has received educational support and scholarships from many benevolent individuals and organizations. As a result of that, she has decided to pay this act of kindness forward by giving to others less privileged than herself.
On her part, Akosua admonished the award recipients: Charles ASARE and Benjamin AFFUL to also pay her act of Kindness forward by helping others less privileged than themselves. Akosua believes that no matter the situation people find themselves in, there are always others who are less privileged and would like to encourage Charles and Benjamin to continue this act of kindness by paying it forward.
Old Students Message
The President of the Tarsco Past Students Association in North America, Mr Nelsonyoung AcManuel (Ackumey) whose daughter is Nelly Baaba AcManuel is of the view that the scheme has become necessary as a result of some of the challenges that the Tarpsa North America leadership faced when raising funds towards the 60th anniversary.
Tarsco, he said, has no financial aid in place that supports its needy students to acquire a college education. As a result, most vulnerable students either struggle through college or have no college education, so they find it difficult to give back to their Alma Mater.
He continued that the cost of a college education is rising and covering those rising costs may be difficult for most Tarsco students.
Therefore a scholarship program may be required to fill the financial gap for some families by providing financial support for students who need help to pay for a college degree; either with unmet financial needs or based on merit. These funds enable students to obtain the education they may not have access to otherwise.
They reward deserving students with the ability to afford higher education. This could help them pursue a college degree and at the end make more decent income so they could help their alma mater in return. Typically, students may not pay back scholarships. So it’s a good thing.
Mrs Naomi Karikari-Danso who is the Tarpsa North America Scholarship Coordinator and the brain behind establishing a scholarship scheme for students of Tarkwa Senior High is an Educator in the United States, who has come to understand and appreciate the impact of alumni-funded scholarships for students in prestigious schools like Harvard, Yale, Cambridge, Stanford and many other colleges in the United States, and is hoping that instituting an alumnus funded scholarship scheme for Tarkwa Senior High students will help raise the level of educational support for current and future students of Tarsco and in turn help produce more able and successful Tarsco alumni who will continue to support future generations of Tarsco students.
Beginning this year 2022, Tarpsa North America will be offering an alumni-funded scholarship program for final-year students of Tarsco to apply to receive educational support for their tertiary education.
