The President of the union, H.E Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo, On October 31, 2022, led the leadership of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) on a visit to the office of the registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat with the rationale of finding out the in-depth cause of the delay in the release of funds to deserving students under Scholarship both at home and abroad.

At the meeting, the president of the Union, expressed heartily the stress scholarship beneficiaries are going through due to the delay in the disbursement of funds and pleaded that the Secretariat in collaboration with other stakeholders works on the immediate release of funds to beneficiaries.

The Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat Dr Kingsley Agyemang in response revealed that the operational office of the scholarship secretariat was slowed down by the global economic crises coupled with the depreciation of the cedi which affected the budget allocated for beneficiaries. Hence, the delay towards the disbursal of funds to support students under Scholarship Schemes.

However, he added that the secretariat is yet to receive an amount of GHS 50 million funds from the Controller and Accountant General’s Department for onward disbursement.
In this regard, he assured the leadership of the Union that the Scholarship secretariat has taken necessary steps in collaboration with its stakeholders to ensure funds are released to appropriate organizations to help finance beneficiaries’ educational needs.

As education remains a right and not a privilege, the union without doubt shall keep to this charge, ensuring funds are disbursed to deserving students both at home and abroad. The president, therefore, appeals to all affected students to stay calm as we pursue this good together.
