NTC frustrating Newly Trained Teachers with Portfolio Assessment – Trainees

NTC FRUSTRATES THE NEWLY TRAINED TEACHERS WITH PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT

For one to be called a trained teacher, the person must have been enrolled and completed successfully in a college of education, a university or any institution which has the basic aim and requirements to train teachers for the nation.

The 2020 group of trained teachers completed successfully from the various institutions in early July 2020.

They sat for NTC licensure exams which was the basic requirement for a trained teacher to be licensed in early October 2020. We understand that NTC has sole responsibility in conducting the procedures and to award qualified Teachers with the Professional Licence, we took it a good fate.

The trained teachers started their mandatory national service in January 2021. Though about 1/3 of the candidates who sat for the Licence exams were referred in some courses and have to sit for it a second time to redeem themselves…some were able to fight a good fight but some are still fighting, No one cares to ask why such candidates were able to pass all the courses from their various colleges and institutions but failed this so-called Licensure exam.

The trained teachers have less than 3 months to complete the mandatory national service and NTC is here again organising zoom meetings which they know very well can not take more than 100 people at the same time to enlighten the trained teachers on the so-called Portfolio assessment.

The newly trained teachers are frustrated because;
1. NTC failed to organise proper sections to educate the newly trained teachers about portfolio development.

  1. The two training sections for portfolio development was an online training, forgetting the fact that many personnel are posted to rural remote areas and so could not join those sections for the training, because of lack of network and other factors

  1. NTC did not publish the information well enough for every trained teacher to be aware of those training sections and prepare adequately for it. The links to join those sections were only spread through WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook and other sites which is not enough to get everyone informed about the training sections.
  2. The Previous years, newly trained teachers do their applications to be recruited to the GES in early September but our case is different, as at now we don’t know our fate.

The above are just a few causes among others for the frustration of the newly qualified teacher.

Notwithstanding all these, there are other groups of teachers who will only pay money for this same said Licence without writing the licence exams nor developing this so-called Portfolio…(Teachers already in the field)

The NABCO teachers in GES are also to be maintained as permanent teachers by GES without knowing anything about licence exams nor Portfolio development..

The NTC and government are not being fair to this last batch of diploma trained teachers from colleges of education, If failure to get the required score will have effects on the newly trained teachers as said by the PROFESSIONAL OPERATIONS COORDINATOR FOR NTC…Mr. Lawrence Sarpong that newly trained teachers would not be able to exchange the provisional licence for full licence and I think personally that it might even affect our postings as things stand now.

Newly trained teachers are passing through all these and no one including Stakeholders, religious leaders, is talking about it, everybody is quiet.

Please the young and vibrant young teachers are developing distaste and losing interest for the teaching profession if nothing is done about all these.

We have really suffered in the hands of NTC, it’s like everyone including the NTC is confused due to the system in which we are but unfortunately we the Newly trained teachers are at the disadvantage side of the whole confusion.
