NTC CPD Guidelines for Teachers in Ghana: Full Breakdown for 2025

Ferdinand EducationGhana | September 20 | NTC CPD Guidelines for Teachers in Ghana: Full Breakdown for 2025

The National Teaching Council (NTC) has outlined new Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines for teachers in Ghana. Here’s a step-by-step guide on requirements, points, and how to meet them for license renewal.   The National Teaching Council (NTC) has introduced a revised framework for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to strengthen teacher professionalism and ensure quality standards in Ghana’s education system. Under the guidelines, all teachers are required to accumulate 20 CPD points annually as part of the licensing and career progression process. This article provides a comprehensive breakdown of the CPD requirements, categories of activities, and practical steps teachers can follow to meet the standard.

What is CPD?

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) refers to structured learning activities that enable teachers to upgrade their skills, knowledge, and competencies throughout their careers. It ensures teachers remain current with curriculum changes, pedagogy, assessment strategies, and digital skills. The CPD framework is also aligned with international best practices, promoting lifelong learning and professional accountability.

Annual CPD Requirements

According to the 2025 NTC guidelines, every teacher must earn 20 CPD points annually to maintain their professional license. Failure to meet this requirement could affect:
  1. License renewal
  2. Eligibility for promotion
  3. Professional recognition

Categories of CPD Activities

The NTC guidelines provide four key categories through which teachers can earn points:   1. Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) Points: 8 annually Cost: Free (employer-supported) Examples: Peer mentoring, lesson demonstrations, reflective teaching sessions, and workshops at the school level.   2. National CPD Days Points: 4 annually Cost: Subsidized, shared between government and teachers Examples: Nationwide workshops and seminars organized by NTC, GES, or the Ministry of Education. 3. Specialized/Targeted CPD Points: 4–6 annually Cost: Fee-based (regulated by NTC) Examples: Accredited service provider courses on ICT integration, inclusive education, leadership, or subject-specific training.   4. Recommended or Self-Initiated CPD   Points: 2–4 annually (optional) Cost: Varies (some free, some paid) Examples: Online courses, professional research, academic conferences, or self-initiated workshops.

How to Record CPD Points

Teachers are required to update their CPD activities on the Teacher Portal Ghana (TPG). Steps include: 1. Log in to your TPG account. 2. Upload certificates or evidence of participation. 3. Monitor your CPD point balance to ensure you meet the annual 20-point requirement.   This system ensures transparency and accountability in tracking teacher professional development.

Why CPD Matters

The NTC emphasizes that CPD is not just a compliance requirement—it is central to teacher growth and education reform.   Benefits include:
  1. Staying updated with new curriculum reforms
  2. Improving classroom management and pedagogy 3. Building competencies in digital literacy and AI integration 4. Strengthening teacher professional identity and accountability 5. Supporting career progression and promotion

Addressing Cost Concerns

One of the most debated issues has been the financial burden of CPD programmes. The NTC has clarified that:
  1. PLCs remain free for all teachers
  2. National CPD Days are subsidized
  3. Service provider courses are regulated to prevent exploitation
The Council has also pledged strict monitoring of service providers to ensure fairness and affordability.

Conclusion

The NTC CPD Guidelines for Teachers in 2025 provide a structured, equitable, and transparent approach to professional growth. By ensuring teachers meet the 20-point annual requirement, the Council is working to improve classroom standards, strengthen teacher professionalism, and align Ghana’s education system with global best practices.   Teachers are encouraged to take advantage of free PLCs, subsidized National CPD Days, and accredited training opportunities to build their capacity and secure their professional future.   Related Links   GES Promotion Guidelines 2025 How to Earn 20 CPD Points Easily
