Ferdinand | EducationGhana | July 11| Notice of Withdrawal of Our World Our People (OWOP) from Primary School Curriculum Extended
NaCCA extends the withdrawal of Our World Our People (OWOP) from the primary school curriculum to the 2025/2026 academic year, as communicated in an official release dated June 28, 2024.
The National Council for Curriculum & Assessment (NaCCA) has announced an extension regarding withdrawing the teaching and study of the Pre-tertiary school subject, Our World Our People (OWOP).
This decision, communicated in an official release dated June 28, 2024, signed by Mr. Matthew Owusu, Deputy Director-General, Technical Services, extends the withdrawal timeline to the 2025/2026 academic year.
Background and Decision:
The decision to extend the withdrawal of OWOP was made following a meeting with the Select Committee on Education of the Parliament of Ghana. This meeting was held under Article 103 of the 1992 Constitution and Order 250 of the Standing Orders.
The Ghana Publishers Association (GPA) had lodged a petition with the Committee concerning withdrawing OWOP from the primary school curriculum.
Roadmap Adopted:
- The effective date for the withdrawal of OWOP has been shifted from the initially planned 2024/2025 academic year to the subsequent academic year, 2025/2026.
- Even after the withdrawal, the OWOP textbook will continue to be used as supplementary reading material. The content and themes covered in OWOP will be integrated into other subjects following a curriculum review.
- NaCCA will maintain ongoing engagement with the GPA leadership to discuss the review process and any proposed changes to the curriculum related to textbook development.
Next Steps
- Stakeholders, including educational institutions, teachers, and publishers, are advised to note the updated timeline for the withdrawal of OWOP.
- NaCCA will continue to provide updates and guidelines as the curriculum review progresses and integrates OWOP content into other subject areas.
NaCCA’s decision to extend the withdrawal of OWOP reflects ongoing efforts to refine and enhance Ghana’s primary school curriculum. This adjustment aims to ensure a smooth transition and effective integration of OWOP themes into other educational materials, benefiting students and educators alike.
